Whether lifelong resident and professional fishing guide Jeff Greene of Montgomery County, Maryland is alone on the Upper Potomac River fishing from his custom made jet boat, guiding clients for trophy smallmouth bass or fishing other bodies of water around the United States like his favorite fishing destination the Florida Keys, it’s not hard to figure out why he is who he is today. His love for fishing and the outdoors started as far back as he can remember. Some of the best and earliest memories fishing were with his Grandfather on Grand Lake in Grove Oklahoma. That’s where he and his grandfather chased catfish, crappie and white bass. During his childhood he would spend summer vacation with his grandparents, who managed the Honey Creek Resort Motel in Grove Oklahoma on Grand Lake. That’s where Jeff started to hone his skills and become the fisherman he is today.

After graduating from High School Jeff went to Glenville State College in Glenville West Virginia, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in psychology. During this time period Jeff never stopped fishing or stopped fishing the upper Potomac River. The state of West Virginia had a lot of water that offered great fishing opportunities and he took full advantage of that.

After college Jeff spent 14 years as a Police Officer with the Washington DC Police Department. During his police career Jeff thrived as a second generation police officer with MPD. Jeff worked in uniformed patrol, narcotics, the First District Warrant Squad and on a uniformed street robbery tac unit. His dad and uncle were also on the job. Both were homicide detectives with the department and retired in the early 90’s. Even as a police officer Jeff fished as much as he could and never lost the passion for fishing. In fact the passion for fishing grew even more as he got older.

In 2014 Jeff really took his abilities of fishing to the next level. He started a small fishing guide service, which later became Shallow Water Fishing Adventures LLC. Fast forward to present day and he has only become more passionate about what he does and how he does it. Now a days Jeff can be found fishing out of his custom made jet boat year around on the Upper Potomac River chasing monster smallmouth bass. Jeff enjoys every aspect of being a professional fishing guide. Being a fishing guide on the Upper Potomac River has brought tremendous satisfaction to Jeff’s life. He enjoys nothing more than to see one of his clients hook up with a trophy size smallmouth bass.

July Meeting – Bruce Ingram – Author, Sportsman, Photographer, and Conservationist

Bruce Ingram
Bruce Ingram

We welcome back author, sportsman, photographer, and conservationist Bruce Ingram to speak at our July 31st meeting.  He will speak to us about the Roanoke River as it flows through Salem and Roanoke, Virginia.  A unique thing about this river, it is one of the rare places to go in Virginia that offers both trout and smallmouth bass.  Come out and learn about fishing this river that also offers quality lodging and restaurants nearby.

Where: Vienna Fire Station, 400 Center St South, Vienna, VA 22180
When: Wednesday, July 31st, 2019 at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 for socializing)

When not teaching English and Creative Writing in the Botetourt County, Virginia, school system, Bruce spends much of his time fishing, hunting, birding, doing habitat improvement projects on his land and enjoying the great outdoors.   We will have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of Bruce’s books outlined below at the meeting.

Bruce has been an outdoor writer/photographer since 1983. His extensive knowledge is reflected in the many books he has published, including The James River Guide, The New River Guide, The Shenandoah/Rappahannock Rivers Guide, and The South Branch and Upper Potomac Rivers Guide.  These books cover a wide range of float trips available on these rivers, plus information on access points, rapids, fishing hot spots, and trip planning.  Basically, paragraph by paragraph, mile by mile, Bruce takes you on a trip down these rivers, so that when you go on your own trips, you will have a safe, productive fishing experience.

Bruce and his wife Elaine recently co-wrote a book titled Living the Locavore Lifestyle, about ways to live a sustainable lifestyle by hunting and fishing for food, gathering wild fruits and nuts, and raising a garden, chickens, and fruit trees.  It also contains a number of essays on the joys of hunting and fishing.

His book, Tenth Grade Angst is a Young Adult fiction novel.  It is the sequel to his first YA novel, Ninth Grade Blues. His third book in the series, Eleventh Grade Stress will be out this fall.

In addition to his books, Bruce has also placed nearly 2,500 articles in magazines and some 3,000 photos. He regularly writes for such magazines as Virginia Wildlife, Wildlife in North Carolina, Whitetail Times, Turkey Country, Outdoor America, Quality Whitetails, Game and Fish Publications, and many others. The Outdoor Writers Association of America has honored Bruce with seven writing awards. The Blue Ridge Land Conservancy honored Bruce and his wife Elaine as their Land Savers of the Year in 2014.  The couple has placed 442 acres under conservation easements. That acreage is in the James and New watersheds. They also have cooking columns for the Virginia Deer Hunters’ Association and the Quality Deer Management Association.
